monday afternoon ponderings sparked by my sociology class's lecture

all of our former relations with the arab world were simply relative to our opposition with the soviet union. as i'm sure all our foreign policy was until it fell. that is what screwed us over. here we are now warning people about the dangers of islamic fundamentalism, when 20 years ago we were telling bin Laden and his supporters to go resist against the "atheist" soviet union. you can still hear a tape recording with that. we aligned ourselves with the political islamists when only 20 or so years earlier we had been against them, because of their "alignment" with the soviets. whatever.

and we hear this from a president, who himself and several of his cabinet members are just as fundamentalist [christian] as any muslim could be. who cover up 60 year old statues for "indecency" or support the state of israel solely for the realization of a biblical prophesy, ushering in the second coming of christ and the conversion of the jews to christianity. (which makes me wonder, why is there this new movement of republican politicians trying to win the "jewish vote" on the basis of their support for israel, when their true intention is to further the goal of their own religion and stab them in the back at the end of the world???)

but i am not worried -- as was mentioned last night bush's father had even higher approval ratings during his war, which was largely seen as justified. not to mention the state of the current economy and other domestic issues is even worse than it was then. and no president in history who was elected exclusively in the electoral college has been reelected for a second term. not that that would realistically make any difference . . . but its just something worth mentioning.
